Art in hotels is not unusual. But art in a garage…

That is already a challenge.
The underground garage of Hotel Bulwar offers 46 parking spaces in the Old Town of Toruń. Here you will find beautiful historic walls, brick arches, and layered masonry that, 200 years ago, formed part of the Toruń Fortress. But that is not all.

The unconventional idea of creating murals as part of a diploma project in wall painting emerged back in 2010. It was brought to life by two students of Nicolaus Copernicus University, Kamila Korotowicz and Monika Mausolf, as a project entitled “Public Space.”

This work depicts views of characteristic monuments of Toruń. They are shown from the perspective of a passer-by in the light of the setting sun. The painting is divided into two parts: one presents a view from Szeroka Street towards the Artus Court and the Copernicus Monument, while the other depicts the Jesuit Church and the Main Post Office building. The colors were deliberately altered to create a unique, almost unreal atmosphere.

The artists described their work as follows:
"The pillar dividing both compositions creates the illusion of a shop window. This effect makes the space of our project seem larger than it actually is. Additionally, the color palette used brightens and enlivens the interior in such a way that the viewer has the impression of being in an open space."

Both views differ slightly in style. They were intentionally executed in different manners to bring variety into the raw, gray garage space. The work on the left is kept in a lightly impressionistic style, while the second is more precise, almost structural. What unites them is their color and tonality. This was meant to serve as a cohesive element linking both works so that one painting flows smoothly into the other. A striking example of this is the bright sky standing out against the silhouettes of buildings and people.

In 2025, another graduate of Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń, Marta Rochnińska, defended her master’s thesis in Painting in Architecture, entitled “Times of Day.”

Ms. Marta created as many as five murals, and she describes her work as follows:
"Within the span of a single day, our surroundings change dramatically, colors transform, and so do our experiences. The cycle is connected by motifs of water, bridges, and trees, which serve as symbols of memory. In terms of color, I drew on the practice of Impressionism, exploring how light influences the perception of colors. Stylistically, however, I aimed for a more synthetic, graphic representation.

I designed the whole in such a way that, from any spot in the garage, one can smoothly follow the transformation between the murals."

So you will surely agree that this is one of the most beautiful and fascinating underground parking lots you have ever seen.

Or perhaps you would like to organize an exciting, space-demanding event here? As you surely know, Hotel Bulwar in Toruń specializes in organizing conferences, gala dinners, banquets, and workshops.
